6 Month Recheck and New Chapter

We can use some pawsitive thoughts here at Purrkins Palace

We ask the tripawd nation for prayers, pawsitive thoughts, good juju, for Purrkins, please!

6 Month Recheck

December 3, we had our six-month recheck appt curbside.
I have no idea the odds here, but that morning of the appt. Purrkins showed me something was wrong; what we thought was his mouth. He did a painful yawn type thing, his eyes looked off to me, and I went to look in his mouth, and he growled at me. (Never Purrkins unless he is in pain). Β The Vet took a look at Purrkins mouth and suspected a tooth is bothering him. (He has had reabsorption lesions in the past. Happy Hoppy Eighth Birthday. He would need dental & radiographs to confirm.

The Vet did the recheck – bloodwork, chest X-rays, urinalysis, and bp sent us home with a low dose of gabapentin for the tooth pain. (another story entirely) grrr. Controlled substance!!

Purrkins bloodwork was great, chest X-rays clean, urinalysis clean, and bp great!

The soonest they could do a dental is in February because appts are all backed up from covid. The Vet gave us several other dentists to phone again, all booked until February. That was not an option for us, so we dug further and found a gold kitty hospital (one of a few in Michigan); they would love to see Purrkins that Friday.

Switching vets curbside, oh yes. Not getting a dental appt until February forced our hand, and for that, we could not be more thankful!

New Kitty Only Hosptial

The kitty only hospital has been the biggest blessing and NO comparison to a traditional high volume practice. No comparison to a kitty friendly practice either. Β We have tried two kitty, friendly practices! No comparison; we have not even been inside, mind you. They have taken so much time with us and have been available to us anytime we have needed them by phone, email, etc. If you have a cat, please do your cat and yourself a favor and find a kitty only clinic Cat-Friendly Veterinarian.

I was so nervous for Purrkins having to go into a new place, new people on his own. When we pulled into the parking spaces, they are all marked to know where each patient is. New of course, for these times, and when I looked up and saw a number 3, We felt a sense of relief, our sign!!

Our sign!

Curbside Appointment

Our appt could not have gone better! They start the appt with Purrkins in the car; we talked to the tech and Vet first. Then they came to get Purrkins and the Vet phones again. We were on the phone most of the visit with the Vet. She is LOVELY. What a massive change speaking to a cat only vet. She knew every term I was using as I described what Purrkins was experiencing what pain signals he was showing me.

She can see the same as our Vet; one tooth likely will need to come out. But again, requires the dental and radiographs to confirm! We booked the dental for January 11. She will ensure Purrkins is comfortable until our next app. I told her what our Vet sent home and that I BUMPED up his Gaba dose on my own, knowing Purrkins did well on Gaba in recovery and wanting to make him comfortable until we saw her!! She was glad I did πŸ™‚ She sent him home with 200 mg of Gabapentin a day. 100 mg every 12 hours and will check on us in a few days and see how Purrkins was doing,

My Gaba

Purrkins did ok on the Gaba but started having these twitches – whiskers, eyes. I took videos for the Vet; she took a look and said it’s nothing to be concerned with and thought it was mild tooth pain even on 200 mg of Gaba. So we continued the Gaba, and these twitches become more frequent; I sent more videos. She said she wanted to send the video to a neurologist to confirm she is not missing something and did! I had already googled all this and researching the what-ifs. Ugh, don’t do my friends!

Focal seizures

So I get the call from the kitty Vet; the neurologist is afraid Purrkins is having partial seizures/focal seizures. (MY FEAR) They want to see him and rule this out. The vet wants to postpone the dental until we know more. The fear Purrkins could have a grand mal seizure being sedated.

We had the choice to start antiseizure meds right away or wait to see the neurologist. We chose both to start meds phenobarbital and booked the neurologist appt. The pheno was like a little miracle; the periodic twitches stopped until January 12th – 12 days into the meds.

Purrkins had three more of these in a row! A head tilt- cocked to one side along with a head quiver. I panicked, grabbed my phone, recorded, tried to help Purrkins, but there is no way my panic helped. I have my phone 24/7 because the vet needs to see these as they happen. Thankfully they only lasted seconds. I called the Vet and sent a video of this entirely different twitch, seizure. Dr.R, the kitty vet, sees a typical focal seizure in the video and what the neuro was afraid might be happening. She increased his phenobarbital that evening.

Back to the kitty Hospital

We went back to the kitty hospital yesterday to check the plasma levels of the pheno in Purrkins blood. It needs to reach a certain therapeutic level to be effective, and we have room to move up in the meds. Since the increase, today is day four so far, so good. Purrkins is resting a little more but no twitching. KNOCK ON WOOD!

The bad news is a side effect of the meds is weight gain. Purrkins gained ounces since his last appt. Kitty vet said not to worry right now about the side effects they will subside, sedation, starving, weight gain, peeing more, increased thirst. She asked me to send her the nutritional analysis of the food we feed and how much etc., she would take a look and see how we can counteract the meds and help Purrkins in the future. NEVER have we had someone care and take the time to go this far and want all these details. I know she will have some input for us. She truly cares about her patients and wants the best absolute best for them, she continues to tell me she is there for us, and these are not just words. She has been here for us 1000% HUGE BLESSING!

Neurology

Our neurologist appt is Monday, the 18th at 9:00. In Farmington Hills, Dogwood Veterinary about an hour and a half drive for us. We are scheduled for an exam and MRI. We are preparing (the best one can) for the worst and praying/hoping for the best. (Admin’s words:) The cause could be several things and many non-life-threatening! However, it can be our worst fear, too, yes _ in the brain! We are holding on to all the pawsitives until we know more. Purrkins could have a grand mal seizure while being sedated, and we hold onto that if this would occur, Purrkins will be in the best place possible to get the care he would need.

The rest of the answers may or may not come! And we will take each thing as it comes. We will do our absolute best for Purrkins. We have the best team going into this Kitty vet, dr matt (holistic and traditional vet), and the neurology group, who are all diplomats in the field. The results will go to both vets, the kitty Vet & Dr. Matt. Dr. Matt being our beloved Dr. Matt, has already spoken with us and talked us off the cliff for now. Again huge blessing to have this team for Purrkins.

Tripawd Ambassador

Purrkins goes wearing his tripawd gear, bandana on his carrier, and Aunt Rene’s protecting this cat charm! We will be carrying you all with us on Monday. We will not jump into the deep end just yet, Although, of course, I already have and clawed myself back out! Β Now that I’m out, I’m staying out and will take each tick at a time. (my aunt Janice sage words)

Protect this catπŸ™πŸ»
Always a Tripawds Ambassador

We hope and pray today and tomorrow remain uneventful for Purkins, no twitches, no seizuresπŸ™πŸ», and we get to our appt w/o a hitch!!

Mark and I have been on watch 24/7! We know what to watch for and when we need to go to the ER. If the twitching lasts longer than one min, we wrap Purrkins in a blanket and race to MSU. Our prayer this does not happen, but we have to know what to do and when.

Preparing for our long day away!

What? All-day no one to feed me?

Sexy Saxton will have to be on his own for the day we bought a Cat Mate timed feeder for him so he will not miss a meal. Cat Mate C300 Automatic 3 Meal Pet Feeder with Digital Timer for Cats and Small Dogs

Cat Mate Feeder

It has a little ice pack to serve wet food (we do raw but will use can for this day, it holds three meals, one instant and two on a timer.

ice pack inside
Ice pack

We bought it just for this day trip, and thankfully both the boys are not afraid of the sound and will use it. I don’t care for plastic, but it is BPA free. I can’t suggest it highly enough; it works like a dream right on time, no issues whatsoever, and a huge peace of mind knowing Saxton will get his meals on time. (sorry, I should have clipped Saxton’s video a bit:) too late.

We also installed a little Wyze camΒ to check in on Saxton and make sure all is ok.

The neurology appt is also curbside, so we will be in the car the day we cannot even use the restroom.

Here is our to-go bag Tripawd Cats Have Fun Tote Bag for Monday;)

All Purrkins records and supplies for our long day

I will do my best to keep you all posted as we tread into another unknown. If I go mia, it is because I will need to regroup, ok.

A picture worth a thousand wordsπŸ’

Stay pawsitive with us, please.

  1. Holly! I was thinking about you all morning and as I sat down to visit the Forums, I was so glad to see you posted an update. And the precious photos…OMC! You capture Saxton and Purrkins so beautifully on camera, this just made me smile ear to ear.

Thank you for bringing everyone in on this, the more pawsitivity the better right? YESSSS!!!! TRIPAWD POWER IS MIGHTY POWER!

I’m sooooooo glad the bumped up meds are working. Paws crossed the success continues, you all need a break from the stress you’ve gone through lately. I can only guess how much it affects all of you. Is that why you guys were up at 1:30 am watching the field mice?lol! Well, it was definitely worth it with those adorable photos. GOOD JOB BOYS!

Stay strong, keep the faith and know that we are sending much, much love and pawsitivity to you. Keep us posted. xoxoxoxoxo

    1. Thanks, Rene & Jim too😘😘😘🀝🀝
It took all of me to get this posted & i knew you would see it;)
I know the boys are photogenic i have great subjects;) YESSSS the more, the better, and i know our tripawds family would rally. I kept meaning to update everyone, but things kept changing, and ugh,

Yes, TRIPAWD POWER IS THE ULTIMATE POWER! IT has worked magic for us many times before!
So far, so good, but Purrkins is sedated on the bigger dose! Right now, we are thankful for no seizures and sedation.

You don’t want to guess or know trust, me:) We are up at all hours these days. The highlight is the mouse! Purrkins must hear him and tells me to open the kitchen door/banging it! Of course, i oblige! The boys have a blast, and i have one watching them! Hehe, I told Purrkins i might get him a mouse. Not to kill, to watch thru glass!

We are giving it our all that i can promise you! You know i will;)
Loads of love and appreciation for being there for us always, Rene!

  2. Oh wow, I got tears in my eyes and strong hope and prayers for your future πŸ™β€ You’re right, the love and compassion that we all share is very strong. It takes the miles between us away.
I love your timer for the foods but I think Andy would snarf the food out of all of them if we weren’t watchingπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I thought about getting the ones that only open for the pet that it’s meant for but 🀯🀯🀯 expensive!!
My thoughts and heart are with all of you. I’m sending you all vibes of hope and pawsitivity, always ❀
You got this, and we got your back ❀
    Lots of love,
    Jackie and Huck❀❀❀

    1. Thanks, Jackie! No tears but pawsitivity, hope, and prayers! I also know full well! I know those feeders you are referring to. This feeder is ideal for one cat cause, yes, one would scarf and bully the other one. It is excellent for the purpose we bought it for and the peace of mind it will give. Miles and distance are nothing on this site.
      Loads of love & appreciation!
      Love to the furmily, please!

I can only share if you need to use restroom ask they might let you in. I had to and they did. I will explain in a blog post but just ask especially if its a long day.

    1. Thanks, Michelle. We can use hugs and prayers!
Thanks for the tip, but we know in advance we can not use their restrooms. We had to sign a covid/rule form that is clear we cannot use the facilities. It says we can phone them when we are there to know where we could go. We understand the times etc. we will figure something out and have cups, lol, just in case:)

Hugs back & Loads of love

  4. Oh Holly! I know exactly what you are feeling right now, having just recently gone through the seizure scare with Kodi the end of October. His was, I feel, a Grand Mal, at 1:oo am (of course, why would it happen during business hours?) Sending you all of our pawsitive vibes – Tot style. I LOVE the prayer you posted….wish I’d have known of it during Kodi’s last days; it would have brought me much needed comfort. In return, I send you my favorite mantra when scared and stressed: “Let your faith be bigger than your fear”. Hang in there, you’ve got this!

Paula and Warrior Angels Nitro and Kodi

    1. Thanks, Paula,
I know you do, and I have been thinking of you! Complete h— and of course at 1:00 am right.

I have many little books of prayers. This one comes from Keep Calm and Trust God under the worry section. Check into the little book https://www.amazon.com/Keep-Calm-Trust-Jake-Provance/dp/1939570158/ref=sr_1_1?crid=SQF9EQQ1OX2W&dchild=1&keywords=keep+calm+and+trust+god&qid=1610837318&sprefix=keep+calm+and+tr%2Caps%2C186&sr=8-1
i know you will find many in there. They have different versions; I only have the above.

I wish i had known sooner on Kodi i would have sent it.
Thank you i will hang onto this one as well. Let your faith be bigger than your fear!~ I love it. Thank you😘

Loads of love, spirit kisses to Nitro & Kodi! Smooches to the tots

  5. Holly, Purrkins and family.
Oh my gosh, you are the most prepared, gadget ready mama. I won’t tell Eli how you have everything set up for Saxon when you are having an outing with Purrkins. Eli’s lucky, and very forgiving, when I tell him “here’s a bowl of food for the day, please fend for yourself.”
You are doing such an amazing job working with your incredible vet team. They can only do a great job when they have a wonderful cat mama like you to work with.
You and Purrkins are in my thoughts and I hope for the best diagnosis possible. Mona always went to the vet clinic with her brush so they could brush her before any poking and prodding. I hope Purrkins can bring something along to give her comfort.
    Huge hugs, Kerren
    XXOO

    1. Thanks, Kerren
I hope you and Eli are managing, ok? You have been in our thoughts!

We have little choice for Saxton as he has health issues; we can’t leave a bowl of dry food down for him. We don’t have anyone to come and check in on him. Even if he could tolerate the dry food, he would scarf it all down at once. Be sick and then sol.

Thanks, Kerren. Our team has been a blessing, and they adore Purrkins. Neurology will, too, when they meet him, i have no doubt.

Purrkins does have his little comfort item, a little blanket I crocheted for him; he has it in his carrier – a safe hut that he feels comfy in. I made another one for him that I hope they can use for the MRI if allowed? Everything is iffy with covid. He is a champion rider, but he is not so keen to go so often these days because he goes in alone, and we are all masked. It’s terrible for him, and we hate it! We should have some idea on Monday and will be hoping & praying for the best. We want Purrkins to feel like himself again and have a QOL. I should have stated in the post and didn’t lack sleep does not help my brain! I asked the vet if Purrkins was in pain when this happens, and she said he is not. He is not aware that these focal seizures are happening?

He does not deserve any of this none our furmily do. I remember you saying with Mona and her thyroid that it was harder than the amputation; YES, so is this. It’s the unknown and not being able to help!

Huge hugs back & loads of love! Scratches to Eli, please & spirit kisses to Mona!

      1. Sweet Holly and adorable Purrkins,
I’m so glad to hear you are focussing on Purrkins quality of life. I made a list of things Mona enjoys as a reminder for me to check in daily with her.
Eli and I are doing well. Mona had such a quiet presence in the house that at times I’d look for her in her favourite places, one of which was the couch. Eli has now taken over that spot since he dare not when Mona was around!
The unknown is hard. Remember to take it a step at a time to keep your mind clear. Much love and healing thoughts for you and Purrkins.
p.s. Eli got your scratches and Spirit Mona welcomes your kisses.
        Kerren
        XXOO

        1. Hi Kerren,
Purrkins quality of life is the utmost priority it will always be. We will not let Purrkins suffer, and right now, Purrkins is himself but is sedated on the higher dose of meds (sleeping more). The vet told us this is a common side effect in the beginning, and it will subside. Purrkins is still Purrkins. He asks for meals, still playing, grooming, racing around the house ( which is not ideal when he is not 100% on meds). It has never been, but he has Mark and I to chase after him; he acts as if nothing is wrong!

When he had these seizures, they lasted seconds, and Purrkins was right back to be himself afterward. It is not something we ever want to see again, that is for sure, and I can tell you that if I ever doubted whether i would know when it’s time, I do not now! I appreciate your list and what you watched with Mona. We are doing the same. We could not love these boys more; they are furmily, and they will be treated that way furever. Like you, we do not want this to ever turn into an emergency. We will do the test to see what we are dealing with and take each step as you say at a time. My aunt always says one tick at a time;) and that’s what we strive to do. We need to know how to best help Purrkins in the future, whatever that may be. And have a plan in place.

I’m glad to hear you and Eli are maintaining and doing ok. Eli is staying close to Miss Mona by taking up her spot on the couch! Mona’s scent is still there, and he is close to her;) I know how hard it is to not see Miss Mona in her spots and the lack of routines. I know she is still present with you; I hope she has sent a sign.

          Thanks again Kerren
Big hugs and another smooch and scratches to Eli & another smooch to trikitty angel Mona

  7. TRIPAWD PAWSITIVE HEALING POWER IS NOW FULLY OPERATIONAL!!! It is traveling so fast to surround Purrkins with it’s protective power it’s breaking the sound barrier!!! BAM!!!

I have to say Holly, I don’t think I took a breath or blinked an eye the whole time I was reading this. To state the obvious, Purrki s could not have better care from you and Mark and you truly are leaving no stone unturned.
And yes, there is NO reason to think that this may be one of those treatable situations. We have a “choice” (sort of) when faced with an unknown like this. We can let our focus be fear driven….or let our focus be optimistic. And unless there is reason to believe otherwise, good for you for staying pawsitive and focusing on a good outcome! IF it turns out to be something negative, you will develop a plan and move forward.

Something that really stood out to me, Purrkins is doing great otherwise!! To me, that’s a huge plus that, to me, tends to I dictate nothing to awful is going on.

Purrkins IS. a Super Kitty and our Super Hero! When you add that strength with all the pawsitive energy, the prayers, the juju, and the extraordinary care and love from his hoomans and Saxton, Purrkins is going to continue to kick butt!!

The pictures are priceless. Purrkins is so handsome. Those eyes…OMC…beautiful. And Saxron and his markings…so cute.
I can only imagine how difficult this was to write. I hope that, in a way, it was theraputic and helped to push the fear aside and feel more empowered knowing we are here with you AMD your faith will empower you too! Of course, the bonus for us was we got to see pictures of Purrkins in all his Super Kitty glory!!

And btw…the feeding “machine” is amazing! And seeing how quickly Purrkins and Saxron figured it out was absolutely brilliant. And they looked soooo cute eating their treat!

Okay, I know you won’t get much sleep, but just try and remember the power of the healing energy from your Tripawd family and prayer and doses of juju!πŸ‘πŸ™πŸ‘Œ

I’m off to your comment now. Loads of love!!

    Lots of love
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

    1. Thanks, Dear Sally!
We feel the pawsitive healing power broke thru the sound barrier! YOUR beautiful light has sealed the deal, thank you!😘

Purrkins is Purrkins 99.7 % of the time, yes, and thank the lord/ universe, or I would not have not crawled back out of the deep end! Dr. Matt put us back in place, I swore to him and Rene not to Dr. Google again until we have a diagnosis. It is also possible we may not get answers. And honestly, considering some of the alternatives, that’s ok with us too. We can deal with most things, but the – in the brain is what sent me over. I had to regroup and get refocused. Seeing Purrkins go thru this is H__!

I had to remind myself Purrkins had a low-grade STS Mitotic figures 0-1 per 10 high power fields on his wrist. We got clean, huge margins, four years, and seven months ago! Everything since has come back great, So YES, LOTS to hold onto that does not point to scary! But I also have to leave that open as a brace for myself, if that makes sense. I know it is a possibility, and we all know sneaky _! We hope & pray that’s not in the cards. If it is? Well, we see what the neurology group, kitty vet, and Dr. Matt have to say and do our research! All i know is IF that’s the cause, one type is simple to treat, curative, and one well, we are not going there now!! We will make the best-informed decision we can with all expert’s input.

Purkins welfare and QOL IS and will ALWAYS be first!! We will not allow Purrkins to suffer in any manner!

We don’t know a thing right now other than focal seizures, and all tests are good so far! The meds are helping for sure. When we get to the therapeutic dose, we will know more. The kitty vet will send the blood plasma results we got done on Friday to the Neurology group and us on Monday.

Purrkins is our superhero and super kitty, and with all our tripawd family behind him, we have so MUCH to hope for and stand taller!

Therapeutic, I’m not sure πŸ˜‰ I was doing better before I had to put it down all in words, BUT to have you all here and post and write the comments, know you’re all with us! YES, this part is!! To have the best of humanity, all of you lovely souls in our corner, sending love, pawsitivity, prayers, good juju! HELPS more than words can type or say! Just as you all have done thru Purrkins journey! I hate we all have to be here, and we all understand this h–l, but we are thankful to have every one of you in our lives!

Loads of love and much appreciation! BIG Hugs!
Smooches to Frankie and Miss Myrtle and spirit kisses to Happy Hannah.
